Excavators are common tools at construction sites. The first designs of early excavators are nearly as old as the United States, dating back to 1796. The technology and designs have obviously come a long way since then, and today the equipment is ubiquitous at job sites around the world. Excavators are commonly referred to as backhoes or diggers. This heavy construction equipment is used to dig into the ground or, occasionally, to move around large, heavy objects. There are two tracks at the base of the machine for movement, with a platform above the tracks that rotates either 180 or 360 degrees, depending on the type of excavator. This cab houses the operator, who controls the excavator with various controls. There’s one set of controls that dictates the forward and backward movement of the machine, and another that controls the bucket and arm. In most cases, these machines will be powered by hydraulic fluid, cylinders and motors.

Here are a few examples of some of the most common types of excavators and their uses:

  • Dragline excavators: These are among the largest excavators, and use different processes to operate. The equipment has a hoist rope system that attaches to the bucket with a hoist coupler. Then, the other side of the bucket has a dragline that runs from the bucket to the cab. The rope is used to raise and lower the bucket, and the dragline pulls the bucket toward the driver. These excavators are so large that they usually arrive in pieces and have to be assembled at the site. They’re most commonly used for massive civil engineering projects, such as digging canals.
  • Crawler excavators: This is one of the more common types of excavator, one you’ve probably seen when passing construction sites. These crawlers run on pairs of tracks and are frequently used for mining or heavy-duty construction. Their hydraulic power systems easily lift up soil and heavy materials. They can easily scale hills or go down them, which makes them ideal for jobs taking place on uneven landscapes.
  • Skid steer excavators: These small excavators are attached to skid steers and are designed for much smaller jobs, such as simple residential work and digging out pools. They are also frequently used for debris removal at construction sites. These excavators have booms and buckets that face away from the driver, and have attachments that reach over the cab.
  • Suction excavators: These excavators are frequently used for underground utility work, because they are much more precise and don’t disturb the surface as much. They have a suction pipe that can let out air at up to 400 horsepower. A water jet loosens up the ground, and then the vacuum carries away the loosened soil and debris rapidly.

There are other types of excavators, but these are four of the most common and most distinct examples. For more information about excavators for sale in Abilene, TX, what they do and the various types that exist, we encourage you to contact the team at V-Bar Equipment Company today.
