OSHA is the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This organization is responsible for assuring the health and safety of America’s workers. It establishes standards, provides training and education and encourages ongoing improvements in workplace safety.

As part of these ongoing efforts, OSHA has recently awarded more than $10 million in grants to be used for safety and training programs. This is a significant announcement for forklift dealers in Abilene, TX who often work with customers who face daily hazards on the job. These funds will allow improvements and enhancements to workplace environments that could greatly benefit forklift dealers in Abilene, TX and their clients.

The Grants

The $10 million in grants are being awarded to nonprofit organizations, community colleges and labor unions to develop educational, training and safety programs. The figure includes $5 million earmarked for Disaster Response and Recovery Training Grants. These will provide training for workers who are involved in disaster response in the Gulf States, which have been impacted by hurricanes. Training provided by the grants will equip workers with the knowledge and skills to handle water contamination, trips and falls, heavy equipment operation, biological hazards, animal bites, power tools, electrical hazards, construction hazards and other common hazards.

The OSHA funds will be awarded in three categories:

  • OSHA Training Materials Development Grants: These funds are designated to help with the evaluation, validation and development of training for the construction industry and transportation hazards related to work.
  • Targeted Topic Training Grants: These grants support training for general industry hazards and construction. Forklift dealers in Abilene, TX will most likely see the greatest impact from these grants.
  • Institutional Competency Building Grants: These allocations will help nonprofit organizations enhance health and safety trainings and further outreach efforts to assist workers in hazardous fields.

As Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao explains, “These grants are being awarded to ensure that workers in the Gulf Coast cleanup and recovery efforts are operating in a safe and healthy environment. Much of the recovery work will involve heavy equipment and hazardous situations where the training these grants provide will enable workers to do their jobs more safely.”

Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Jonathan L. Snare adds, “The grants offer opportunities to train employees in targeted occupational safety and health topics and develop practical, user-friendly materials and curricula that will benefit workers in the future.”

If an organization is interested in obtaining funding under these grants, it can submit an application at www.grants.gov. The additional training made possible could reduce workplace injury and liabilities and increase efficiency and productivity for the organization.
